How can you write a Genre story without copying other stories in the Genre?
Q. I want to write a story in a particular genre but most of my ideas are used in other stories, or the ideas might be outside the genre and wouldn't really make sense. (ie; Writing a story about King Arthur fighting dragons and searching for the holy grail. Or writing a story about King Arthur and giving him a sawed-off shotgun.) How can you write a story in a Genre without copying other ideas, if the genre is defined by those kind of ideas?

What are two good short stories to compare and contrast?
Q. I am writing a paper this evening comparing and contrasting two short stories. I am wondering if anyone has a good idea of two stories that would suite well to this paper? What break up stories can you share where it made you happier in the end?
Q. Kind of similar to my last question, but a little different... What break up stories do you have that can support the idea that a hard break up can actually be a very good opportunity for someone to find someone/something better? But it is also up to you to let yourself grieve for what you lost, but then get back into the swing of things and not let it break you! My last break up was baaad. We were living together, very lovey dovey and literally out of the blue, one day he comes home and says he doesn t think things are going to work out. Huge blow, didn t see it coming at all. Just that afternoon he sent me a text telling me he loves me and cant wait to see me. Long story, so I wont get into the in depth details. But we talked that night and we seemed to come the the conclusion that we would see how it goes. Then the next morning he doesn t come to work (we worked for the same company)… [cont.]

A. Jennifer, you need to pick up Writer's Market, a book by the people who issue Writer's Market, or sign up for their website (which is not free). They list many markets for fiction, sorted by genre, and give some writers' guidelines for each. Another way is to spend a few hours at a place with a really good magazine selection, like a major bookstore. Scan lots of them to identify places which publish work something like yours.

A. I think what your friend is referring to is the Miami look. Most people are getting tired of the ugly dirty scenes of cities we often see in the movies and find in books. To days people want to see and read beauty (not in women and men, but scenes). Slums are out, Miami look is in.

How do I get short stories published in magazines etc?
Q. I'm from the UK and wondering which magazines are the best to write to. Is there a method to getting stories printed or is it just a case of writing to as many places as possible and hoping for the best? A. Hi, you need magazines like Take a Break or Bella who accept unsolicited manuscripts. You need something with a good twist at the end, don't put too many characters in your story as it gets confusing. Keep things simple, don't used two words where one will do; like "she wore a grass green jumper" you only need to say 'green.' Watch your spelling and punctuation, editors don't have time (even though it's their job) to correct every error. Always enclose a cover note and a S.A.E - a list of the work you've already had published if any might also help (depends on the editor.) Have you tried the small press magazines? Most have a print run of 150 to 500+. You'll need a copy of the Small Press Guide, go here for more info

A. The Writers' Handbook 2007 may help. It has a list of Publishers and Agents who you can send them to. From my experience, I'd start with the publishers, as agents are too swamped to deal with them. Do you have a whole book's worth of short stories to publish? You could try self-publishing on sites like www.lulu.com. Or try joining a writers' forum like and ask around. There are plenty of published authors on there

The person at the hotel gave him his keys and warned him never to go out of his room at 12:00 midnight so he took his bags and went up to his room, forgeting to ask why. A. Submit your stories to literary magazines that are willing to print them. After some time being published, you can collect you work and submit it to some publisher, and be able to make money. You won't be able to find someone to pay for your work right away, but keep doing what makes you happy and it will all work out.

What are some good short stories about wilderness survival appropriate for 7th graders?
Q. I'm teaching a unit on survival surrounding Jack London's The Call of the Wild. We're focusing on the idea of primordial instinct and the questionably immoral things that people and animals do when survival instincts kick in. We're also talking about which of those things we consider excusable and inexcusable and why. I'm looking for short stories (preferably fiction rather than totally true personal narratives) that focus on these themes. Ideally, I'd like to have them read something that isn't about the cold -- maybe something about a desert, ocean, or tropical location would work better. Any ideas?
