A television situation comedy, often shortened to sitcom, is a genre of comedy that features recurring characters in a common environment such as a home or workplace.

A situation comedy may be recorded before a studio audience. Some also feature a laugh track. Such programs originated in radio.

Today, sitcoms are found almost exclusively on television as one of its dominant narrative forms.

Characteristics

As opposed to stand up comedy and sketch comedy, a situation comedy has a storyline and ongoing characters in, essentially, a comedic drama. The situation is usually that of a family, workplace, or a group of friends.

Traditionally comedy sketches were presented within a variety show and mixed with musical performances, as in vaudeville. The emerging mass medium of radio allowed audiences to regularly return to programs, so programs could feature the same characters and situations each episode and expect audiences to be familiar with them.

Sitcom humor is often character driven and by its nature running gags often evolve during a series. Often the status quo of the situation is maintained from episode to episode. An episode may feature a disruption to the usual situation and the character interactions, but this will usually be settled by the episode's end and the situation returned to how it was prior to the disruption. There are exceptions to this. Some shows feature story arcs across many episodes where the characters and situations change and evolve.

What do you prefer British Sitcoms or American sitcoms?
Q. British sitcoms or American sitcoms? And what is your favourite sitcom? Also, what country are you from? I prefer British sitcoms and my favourite is The Brittas Empire, however I also love Friends and although I prefer British sitcoms, for me it is a close call between The Brittas Empire and Friends. (I am British) What about you?

What makes the Office so different from television sitcoms today?
Q. I'm writing an essay on new comedy in American tv and movies. I proposing that the punchline comedy is moving out and making way for new comedy like the Office. Can someone help with why they think the Office is so different. What makes it stand out. How is comedy in general different today than 10-15 years ago?

A. The Office isn't just a regular sit com. It is a show that feels real, since they talk to the cameras. The whitey humor and the clever remarks make it special. The actors are very real and comical. People can relate to some of the problems that go on in this office that do in their work offices. Like and annoying boss or an odd co- worker. Or even the funny receptionist. The office is most definitely popular among comedians and regular people that look for a good laugh.
