Improvisation is the practice of acting, singing, talking and reacting, of making and creating, in the moment and in response to the stimulus of one's immediate environment and inner feelings. This can result in the invention of new thought patterns, new practices, new structures or symbols, and/or new ways to act. This invention cycle occurs most effectively when the practitioner has a thorough intuitive and technical understanding of the necessary skills and concerns within the improvised domain. Improvisation can be thought of as an "on the spot" or "off the cuff" spontaneous activity.

The skills of improvisation can apply to many different abilities or forms of communication and expression across all artistic, scientific, physical, cognitive, academic, and non-academic disciplines. For example, improvisation can make a significant contribution in music, dance, cooking, presenting a speech, sales, personal or romantic relationships, sports, flower arranging, martial arts, psychotherapy, and much more.

Where the improvisation is intended to solve a problem on a temporary basis, the 'proper' solution being unavailable at the time, it may be known as a stop-gap. This particularly applies to engineering improvisations.

What's the best way to go about developing the ability to play improvisational jazz on the double bass?
Q. I have classical training but I can't really jam with people when I try to.
Asked by SuperGreatGuy - Sun Feb 15 15:29:37 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Having the classical training is an excellent start, that will make it a lot easier for you. To play a jazz bass line, you basically follow the chord changes to a song and play appropriate notes from each chord, connecting it to the next chord. There are a few excellent method books that break this down step by step. Ron Carter and Ray Brown's bass method's, as well as "The Evolving Bassist" by Rufus Reid, and "Mastering Jazz Bass Vol. 1 & 2." Then start learning some tunes and practicing the many ways to walk through the chord changes.

what is the name for improvisational section included in a Mozart concerto?
Q. what is the name for improvisational section included in a Mozart concerto?
Asked by Rob in New Orleans - Sun Oct 22 08:56:20 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. That would be a cadenza. Toward the close of the first movement of a concerto, the soloist was given a short solo section as a showy climax to the movement. Fragments of thematic material were invariably used as a lead-in to the cadenza. The full orchestra would resume on cue for a rollicking finish. While Mozart wrote out some of these cadenzas, especially in his piano concertos, many performers choose to write or improvise their own. No easy task. When Mozart performed his own piano concertos he would do so. This practice continued through the best part of the Romantic Period as well.
